Volvo Trucks Debuts Gas-to-Diesel Diesel Fuel Engine

Volvo Trucks World's First to Meet Euro 5 Standards for Natural Gas Diesel Engines

As a truck manufacturer, Volvo Trucks will first launch a diesel engine jointly driven by natural gas and diesel fuel in the world. This engine can fully meet the Euro 5 emission standards promulgated in 2009. Field testing of the model will be conducted in Sweden and the United Kingdom in 2010. Lars Mårtensson, environmental protection director at Volvo Trucks, said, “This unique technology allows us to combine the advantages of natural gas with the high fuel efficiency of diesel engines, resulting in engines that are 30-40% more fuel efficient than spark-ignition engines. Therefore, The fuel-saving performance of trucks equipped with this engine is much higher than that of conventional trucks."

In August 2007, Volvo Trucks exhibited at least seven prototypes that could be powered by different biofuels. After further analysis and research, dimethyl ether (DME) and natural gas diesel fuel have become the two main types of renewable energy that the company is currently focusing on.

In the past, the use of natural gas for long-distance transport was difficult, and trucks equipped with spark plug ignition engines usually had limited mileage (about 150-200 km). To solve this problem, Volvo Trucks has developed a method of burning a mixture of natural gas and diesel fuel from a diesel engine, which has increased the mileage of trucks by more than 50%. Also, if you use liquefied gas with a higher energy density, mileage will double. At the same time, the driving performance of the vehicle is also better.

"Natural gas is the most readily available alternative fuel for diesel fuel. At the same time, natural gas reserves are also more abundant than oil. Moreover, many countries are keen to produce natural gas that has no impact on the climate because of this The toughest CO2 emissions problem can be solved," said Lars MÃ¥rtensson, environmental protection director at Volvo Trucks.

How Volvo Gas Trucks Operate

The above solution is based on the Volvo Truck Euro 5 diesel engine. When the engine is switched to the gas-driven state, the LNG/LBG or CNG/CBG tanks will be loaded. In addition, a separate fuel system with gas injection devices will be added to the intake manifold.

After a small amount of diesel has been ignited by injection and compression, it ignites natural gas and air mixture. As a result, there is no need for a spark plug to ignite, and at the same time, the high efficiency of diesel can be fully utilized. Therefore, the power and performance of this engine can be completely comparable to traditional diesel engines.

After the natural gas burns out, the truck can continue to use diesel. This is the unique thing about Volvo technology. At the same time, it allows the system to be accepted by customers in actual use, even in areas where the natural gas distribution network is incomplete.

Lars Mårtensson explained that “the truck-mounted processor will continuously calculate the fuel ratio in the current driving mode. In the steady and steady driving process, the optimization of natural gas use can be achieved.”
