LR: Wind power plant will board a commercial ship

The Strategic Research Group of Lloyd's Register of Shipping (LR) has partnered with Totempower Energy Systems and Zodiac Maritime Agencies to evaluate the possibility of installing wind turbines into commercial vessels.

According to LR, the wind power plant will be boarded for sea trials to test the use of wind power to help the shipping industry reduce fuel consumption and pollution emissions. A wind monitoring system designed and assembled by Totempower Energy Systems has been installed on the Zodiac-managed bulk carrier "Cape Flamingo". Sensors are installed at the optimal position of the wind on the ship to collect wind speed, wind direction, turbulence and other data to determine The best location for installing wind turbines.

Zodiac Maritime Agencies Environmental Supervisor Simon Turpin said, "The data collection period will last for 4-6 months. I hope we can better understand the economic and environmental significance of wind power boarding."

LR pointed out that wind power is one of the many clean energy methods discussed by the Strategic Research Group's maritime team and ship owners, design companies, and ship operators. Other ways include LNG fuel, nuclear power propulsion systems, solar and tidal and fuel cells. .
